I put the book down and went into the kitchen. I had already put Nick Drake on the cd player in the computer. Pink Moon is exactly the right mood right now.
I didn’t get up out of the goodness of my heart, but because I had eaten too. I got up to help with dishes. No one helps with dishes because they want to. We all want someone else to bring the food, to whisk it away, and to see to the crumbs that are left behind.
I put the book down and went into the kitchen and found a clean dishrag so I could wipe down the counter. We talked about something, or nothing, and the sound machine in the baby’s bedroom crashed secondary baby monitor waves around us as he slept. I will get up and turn the monitor off later, after his fussing makes the dog stand up and wonder what is wrong and when one of the humans is going to fix it.
